BMW has masterfully navigated the transition to electric vehicles (EVs), ensuring that its EVs retain the essence of their internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts while delivering the benefits of electric power. As the largest seller of luxury EVs in India, BMW continues this trend with the 2024 iX1, an electric SUV that combines approachable pricing with enhanced features, making it a strong contender in the compact luxury EV market.
The 2024 BMW iX1 maintains a design language very similar to its ICE sibling, the X1, ensuring a seamless transition for users adopting electric mobility. The most noticeable differences are the blanked-out grille—which still mimics the design of an ICE BMW in the M Sport version—and the blue outlines on the BMW badges. Despite a 13mm reduction in ground clearance, the iX1 retains an upright stance and expressive front face, giving it a sporty and commanding presence.
The bodywork is simple yet crisp, with eye-catching 3D detailing on the rear lights and contrasting black surfaces that reduce the SUV’s visual mass. Although the reduced ground clearance requires caution over large speed bumps, the spare wheel is now stored in the 490-liter boot, slightly reducing storage space.
Inside, the BMW iX1 mirrors the X1 with minor distinctions such as blue badges and a small B mode for the gear selector. The cabin offers one of the best experiences at this price point, featuring an asymmetric dash that provides a fresh feel. While the vent placement may hinder rear cooling, the electric version exhibits a more natural and open cabin atmosphere, aided by light beige upholstery and an open center console design.
Storage space is ample, though not all of it is secured. The top half’s closed compartment isn’t deep enough for large items, but the vertical wireless charger is thoughtfully designed to keep your phone in sight and secure. The cabin boasts high-quality materials and finishes, with soft surfaces and uniquely textured metallic elements, such as dotted dashboards, grated speaker covers, and chamfered gear selectors. The touch-heavy interface shares tech with the ICE X1, including a 10.25-inch driver’s display and a 10.7-inch touchscreen, both of which have seen improvements in functionality and user experience. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay now operate more seamlessly.
Rear seat comfort is well-maintained despite the shift to electric power. The slightly higher floor only marginally affects thigh support, and the spacious backseat, large windows, and comfortable seats contribute to a pleasant experience. While there isn’t a flat floor, the seat contouring accommodates an occasional third passenger well. However, a better phone storage solution in the center console would enhance convenience.
The iX1 comes equipped with features similar to the regular X1, including massaging front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, leather upholstery, ambient lighting, and connected features. Safety equipment is robust, featuring emergency braking, lane departure warning, brake-based differential locking, and hill-descent control. While an active parking feature is included, blind-spot monitoring and 360-degree cameras would be valuable additions.
The iX1 is powered by a 66.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, with 64.7 kWh usable. The WLTP range is up to 440 km, and real-world testing confirms this, achieving approximately 431 km. The efficient regenerative braking system and well-calibrated Eco mode contribute to this impressive range. Even at highway speeds, the iX1 maintains its efficiency, thanks to its sizable motor outputs and a low drag coefficient of 0.26.
Charging is reasonably fast; the iX1 can DC fast charge at up to 135 kW, reaching 80% in 29 minutes. An 11 kW AC charger fully charges the battery in 6.3 hours.
Despite sitting slightly lower, the iX1 provides an engaging driving experience typical of an SUV. With 313 PS and 494 Nm of torque distributed via an AWD setup—one motor on each axle—the iX1 addresses previous shortcomings of the diesel FWD X1. The tested 0 to 100 km/h time of 5.3 seconds outperforms many performance cars, and rolling acceleration times are among the quickest in this price bracket. The boost mode delivers a surge of performance in 10-second bursts, enhancing the driving experience.
The iX1’s performance remains manageable in all modes. The Eco mode keeps the SUV responsive in traffic and on highways. In other modes, the drivetrain feels less restrained, but power delivery is linear and never jarring. Unlike many EVs, the iX1 maintains traction up to triple-digit speeds, simplifying driving.
