Ather Energy is set to redefine the mainstream electric two-wheeler market with its innovative EL platform. Scheduled for unveiling at Ather Community Day on August 30, the EL concept promises to deliver unique features tailored for family-oriented users. A recent teaser has provided a glimpse of the concept’s silhouette, hinting at an exciting reveal.
The teaser, although subtle, suggests a design geared toward families. Expect to see a traditional fender, a robust front apron, a rectangular headlamp housing, and a spacious, long seat. Practical storage solutions will likely be incorporated, with compartments at the front and under the seat. The flat, expansive floorboard area appears ideal for everyday use.
Ather is aiming for a more approachable aesthetic with the EL concept, differentiating it from the premium Ather 450 and Rizta. While the teaser doesn’t disclose all details, the EL platform is designed to be versatile, cost-effective, and scalable—capable of supporting a range of scooter models to cater to diverse customer needs, including exclusive models for export markets.
The EL platform is engineered for flexibility, featuring modular components that allow for easy swapping of battery packs, motors, and other parts depending on the model. To keep costs low, Ather may utilize more affordable Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries. These batteries not only offer lower costs but also boast longer lifespans compared to traditional Lithium-ion options. The tech suite might be simplified, focusing on essential functions rather than advanced connectivity or ride-assist features.
Currently positioned as a premium EV brand and ranking fourth in sales of electric two-wheelers, Ather achieved a market share of nearly 16% in July. The Rizta remains its bestselling model, surpassing 1 lakh units sold within a year of its launch.
With the introduction of the EL range, Ather aims to penetrate the entry-level electric scooter segment, currently dominated by TVS, Bajaj, and Ola Electric. The EL scooters are anticipated to start at around ₹90,000 to ₹1 lakh, with potential for even more affordable pricing if Ather introduces a no-frills base variant.
Ather is also expected to extend its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option to EL platform scooters. Recently introduced for the Rizta, BaaS made the model available for just ₹75,999. Similarly, Ather 450 users can opt for BaaS at ₹84,341. This affordable BaaS model could position Ather EL scooters as some of the most budget-friendly options in the market.
