Ola Electric is preparing to launch its first electric scooter, with manufacturing set to take place at the Amsterdam-based facility of Etergo BV. The launch is anticipated to occur in January 2021, marking a significant step for the company as it ventures into the electric vehicle (EV) space.
Surprising many, Ola Electric has announced its intention to expand beyond just electric scooters. Despite having no prior expertise in scooter production, the company is signaling ambitions to diversify its EV portfolio. Bhavish Aggarwal, Founder and Chairman of Ola Electric, expressed the company’s goal to become a leader in electric mobility for small vehicles and small city four-wheelers.
One potential expansion is the development of electric quadricycles. Compared to electric passenger cars, electric quadricycles are simpler and less complex to develop. This includes easier regulatory approvals, making it an attractive next step for Ola Electric. Aggarwal’s mention of “small city four-wheelers” likely refers to these electric quadricycles, which would allow Ola to extend its electric powertrain technology to new products. These vehicles are ideal for last-mile connectivity—a segment where Ola already has strong expertise.
Launching an electric quadricycle aligns well with Ola’s core business in shared mobility solutions. Quadricycles offer a cost-effective and comfortable alternative to traditional rickshaws, making them suitable for shared transportation services. Once introduced, Ola’s electric quadricycle could compete with upcoming models such as the Bajaj Qute electric, Mahindra Atom electric, and similar vehicles from manufacturers like Tata Motors and TVS.
Ola’s electric scooter is expected to debut within a month. The initial production will occur at Etergo BV’s facility in the Netherlands, with sales targeted for both Europe and India. Earlier this year, Ola acquired Etergo BV for an undisclosed amount.
The company has stated that the e-scooter will be priced competitively under Rs 1 lakh. Ola Electric is currently searching for a suitable location in India to establish its own manufacturing facility, aiming to create the largest two-wheeler production capacity in the country.
